We started in 2016 with a straightforward premise: most clients are not badly served by the quality of legal work, but by never being told what is happening.
Founded on an unremarkable observation
Alex Wang spent the first decade of his career in commercial litigation, where the client was usually a company with in-house counsel who understood the process. Family and estate work is different. The client is a person, often at the worst point of their life, and the process is opaque to them in a way it never is to the lawyer.
The firm was built around closing that gap. Every new matter produces a written strategy memo before any substantive work begins — the issues, the realistic outcomes, the next three steps and the likely cost of each. It is not a marketing device. It is the document that lets a client decide whether to proceed with their eyes open, and it has occasionally talked people out of hiring us.
Ten years on, the firm acts for clients across British Columbia in family law, immigration, wills and estates, real estate and commercial disputes. We have stayed small deliberately. A four-person firm cannot take every file, which means the ones we take get the lawyer the client actually met.
We practise in English, Mandarin and Cantonese, and a substantial part of our work involves families whose assets, relatives or immigration histories span more than one country.

Four commitments we can actually be held to
Not aspirations. These are the things a client can point at and say we did or did not do.

Say the difficult thing first
A client who hears a realistic assessment in week one makes better decisions than one who hears an optimistic assessment and a correction in month six. We would rather lose the retainer than win it on a promise we cannot keep.

No mystery invoices
Fixed fees are quoted before we start. Hourly work is billed monthly and itemised, and if a file is heading somewhere expensive you will hear about it before the invoice arrives, not with it.

Settle where settling is right
Litigation is a tool, not an identity. Most matters resolve, and the ones that resolve well are the ones prepared thoroughly enough that the other side saw no advantage in continuing.

Advice you cannot follow is not advice. We work in English, Mandarin and Cantonese, and we explain the law in the words people actually use.

Intake call

We run a conflict check, listen to the shape of the problem and tell you honestly whether you need a lawyer, which practice area it sits in, and how urgent it is.

The full picture. We identify the legal issues, the realistic range of outcomes, the immediate risks and any limitation period that is already running.

Written strategy
Within a few days
A plain-language memo: the issues, the plan, the next three steps and the likely cost of each. You can act on it with us, with another firm, or on your own.

Retainer and work
Ongoing
A written retainer, a trust deposit where the work is hourly, monthly itemised billing, and a named lawyer who answers your emails.

Access to legal help should not depend on income
Our lawyers volunteer with Access Pro Bono and sit on family duty counsel rosters, and we run a small number of reduced-fee files each year for clients who fall into the gap between qualifying for legal aid and being able to afford private counsel.
We also publish. The insights section and our client resources exist because a great many questions do not need a lawyer at all — they need a straight answer from someone who is not selling anything.
If you cannot afford us, say so on the intake call. We will point you to Legal Aid BC, Access Pro Bono, the Family Justice Counsellor service or the appropriate duty counsel, and that costs you nothing.

Regulation
Alex Wang Law Corporation is a law corporation regulated by the Law Society of British Columbia. All lawyers carry professional liability insurance through the Lawyers Indemnity Fund, and client funds are held in a pooled trust account in accordance with Law Society rules.
